about the collection

The AW12 collection was formed through a concept and design philosophy that has expanded and changed in several ways throughout. Considering all aspects of the design process has enabled the philosophy to develop in a more directional and mature way.

A Fixed gear bicycle, commonly known as a Fixie, is a one speed bike with no freewheel, meaning that the bike is always in motion. The bikes are simple, free of any clutter such as gears, brakes or any mechanisms. What is left is personal style and taste. Fixed gear bikes, which were initially popular with messengers and track cyclists have become popular with young city-dwellers as they are now seen as a vintage accessory.

Fixed gear riders are making a compromise for their safety to commit to the style and image that is portrayed from the top riders. This style of riding gives my concept a lot of scope to expand and explore, firstly considering the simplicity, lightweight and basic nature of the bike, as well as the fearless and spontaneous nature of the rider. Also looking into the cult status you obtain through riding a Fixie, whilst at the same time having this carefree laid back approach to life.

The fixed gear riders have their own style and look; they are not safety conscious and wouldn’t dream of wearing suitable cycling clothing that will enhance their performance or comfort. They are rebelling against what exists for them. This informed me to make the decision about who I am designing for, how can a collection be designed for a group of people who reject and want to rebel against what they are told to wear. This early decision meant that I was able to focus on these characteristics and mindsets to make influential design decisions. Rather than targeting a group of people that would not be attracted to anything that was designed specifically for them.

A piece of clothing is a way to express your real identity, a way to show everyone else your values and convictions. Style is personality, not uniformity. Fashion trends change people’s perceptions of clothing. Trends influence your look and do not let you decide how you want to express yourself.

Fixed gear riding is vastly about the limits you push yourself to and the boundaries that you strive to break.

“You did not get into it because it was simple, it was because you needed to face, and to some degree conquer, this challenge” (Fixed Gear, 2010).

To adhere to the Fixed gear cult you have to have a certain mindset. The riders are fearless, act on impulse, do the unexpected, crave danger and escape. The riders will not act in a way that is seen to be normal, they have their own style.

The philosophy is about breaking the boundaries of the monotonous high street trends, rebelling against what is seen to be normal and creating a unique and stylish look that communicates your personality and what you are all about.
